Google Doodle Honors Freddie Mercury’s Birthday

Posted September 6

Freddie Mercury’s real birthday would have been yesterday, but today Google is honoring Queen’s former lead singer with a Google Doodle.

The U.K. got a glimpse of the Doodle yesterday, but the U.S. abstained until today to observe Labor Day. Now, Queen-loving Americans can head to the Google homepage to check out the spectacularly animated Doodle (it took three months to create), featuring the song “Don’t Stop Me Now.”

Mercury died 20 years ago at the age of 45 as a result of AIDS. He would have been 65 this month. You can read a pretty touching essay by bandmate Brian May on the Google blog.

Google has featured some pretty fantastic music-themed Doodles of late — the extremely rad tribute to Les Paul springs to mind. Which is your favorite?
