The Hipster Orchestra Covers Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”

And you thought that that song by The Verve was a “Bittersweet Symphony.” Classical cover band the Hipster Orchestra is out with a new album today honoring the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s Nevermind called The Nirvana Sessions.

The Hipster Orchestra, the brainchild of music licensing company Jingle Punks, started off as a joke.

“It’s a simple concept,” says Jingle Punks CEO Jared Gutstadt. “We took modern hit indie songs and re-imagined them as string arrangements for a civilized dinner party. They’re our favorite ‘hipster approved’ songs, washed through the Mark Mothersbaugh filter.”

The band started off covering jams like The Strokes’ “Under Cover of Darkness” and MGMT’s “Time to Pretend,” and soon forayed those covers into appearances on TV shows like NBC’s Last Call with Carson Daly and 90210.

The Nirvana tribute album is the band’s latest undertaking. You can check out a video featuring their cover of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” (a song that was, coincidentally, nominated for Best Vintage Viral Video) above.
