Musicians make it much too easy on fans nowadays when it comes to previewing new albums — with the abundance of album streams, free downloads, TV appearances, etc listening to new tunes is as simple as turning on your monitor. Well, Delicate Steve isn’t giving up his new disc, Positive Force (set to be released on July 10), that easily. Steve Marion, along with parte and WWMTH Creative Lab, has set up a slew of listening posts around New York City and you’ll need a map to find them all.
Ten listening devices have been installed all over Manhattan and Brooklyn, allowing fans to plug in their own headphones and check out the upcoming album. We’re embedded a map of those locations below. One is a food truck/converted NYPD van that features a special sandwich titled “The Delicate Cheese” after the artist himself — a nice touch if you get hungry during your search for tunes.
The unconventional method of streaming the disc is pretty in keeping with the way Marion’s hype machine operates. When Delicate Steve was first introduced to the world, his label Luaka Bop hired Chuck Klosterman to write a purely fabricated press release describing the band’s sound — without even listening to the music. The hilarious bio — and the tongue-in-cheek humor of the move — drew attention to an act whose soft instrumental sound might otherwise have been overlooked.
This isn’t the first time an artist has launched a musical scavenger hunt. In October, Noah Wall hid copies of his album HÈLOÏSE around Manhattan, providing fans with a Google Map to help them locate the vinyl and cassettes.
You can hunt for Delicate Steve’s new album from now until June 3. Check out the full listing of locations below.
