“Somebody That I Used To Know” Is Spotify’s Top Song of 2012

Posted November 29

Last year, we fell to our knees, keening out a bitter lament that Rebecca Black (oh she of “Friday” fame) was the fastest rising Google search term of 2011, according to the search giant’s 2011 Zeitgeist Report. Today, Spotify offers up a glimmering pearl of hope when it comes to our slowly dying world’s taste in music. The top listened-to and shared track of 2012? Gotye‘s “Somebody That I Used To Know.”

We know, we know, this jam is now more overplayed than a game of peek-a-boo with a particularly fussy child, but, well, at least it’s a real song. Sure, it wandered into the many-splendored Memecore genre (joke songs made popular via the Web) when it was covered by the likes of Walk Off The Earth and everyone else in the world, but Wouter “Wally” De Backer is a skilled musician and “Somebody That I Used to Know” is a kick-ass song — at least the first 5 or so times it is.

You can check out the rest of Spotify’s winners below. In the meantime, we wait for Google’s report with breath that is bated. Something tells us that a certain billion-view horsey dancer could be the next Rebecca Black. End times, y’all. End. Times.
