Meet Make A Band Famous Nominee: Tatiana Owens

Posted May 24

As you prepare yourself for a long weekend of voting, babes, we must ask: Have you heard of our brand-new Make A Band Famous category? Allow us to explicate: We have chosen 10 up-and-coming, awesome bands with thriving fanbases to face off in the ultimate competition. Five will be chosen — by fan vote — to play the O Music Awards on June 19 (those will be announced on May 31) and one of those five will get a HUGE opportunity: a once-in-a-lifetime shot to play VMA weekend in August, as well as the distinction of becoming MTV’s Artist to Watch, VH1’s You Oughta Know, or CMT’s Listen Up highlighted band. Today, we’d like to introduce you to one of those 10 acts, Tatiana Owens.

Harlem native Tatiana Owens knows how to write a tortured love song – as is evidenced by her pop/RnB cry-in-the-mirror single “Pendulum.” Having performed in her share of musicals – and provided the vocals for a wildly popular parody of Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” – Owens’ stage presence and verve is undeniable. Let’s see if the pendulum swings in her direction in this competition.

What is your earliest musical memory?

I was singing and dancing in front of about 2,000 people. I remember them smiling at me. I thought they were laughing, but it was because I was such a cute little 7-year-old.

Tell us a little bit about your songwriting process?

I am inspired by almost everything around me. I usually get submissions from producers and DJ remixers. I’m usually most inspired by the music. The melody of a song just comes to me and most of the time the words do to. Or, I will take a story from my life and put it in my music.

Which of your songs do you think is the most representative of your music? Why? Tell us about it.

That’s a tough question. I have wide variety of music that I enjoy singing. I think it would have to be ‘Pendulum.’ That song represents all of my emotions. It expresses the ‘Urban Pop’ side of me. Also, it is a song I often go to when I am having man problems! LOL.

What’s the craziest thing a fan has ever done for you?

The Captain of Team Tati posted a picture of him trying to tell Siri to say my name and vote for me. Siri had an epic fail. It wasn’t crazy, but it was really cute!

What’s running through your head when you’re performing live?

When I am performing new songs, definitely the lyrics! Most of the time I’m just enjoying the crowd’s energy while working my stilettos (that I’m totally obsessed with).

Which musicians inspire you and why?

I absolutely LOVE Alicia Keys. She has so much soul in her voice and you can feel everything just by listening to her. She is open with her lyrics and not afraid to go places other artists won’t. That’s what really inspires me about her.

What do you hope people do when they listen to your tunes?

I hope they can jam to it! All I want is for people to turn it up and cry, laugh and enjoy singing along!

Do you have signature style? If so, what is it?

I definitely have a strong shoe fetish. You won’t catch me at a show NOT wearing heels. I always make sure my shoe game is on point!

Kittens or puppies? Explain.

Definitely Puppies! Cats tend to eat people when they die. Dogs look for help and lay next to the owner and cry! LOL! I’ve always had the biggest love for dogs. They are also the cutest out of the two.

Why should we vote for you?

I have been committed to music like it’s my child, if I had one, my whole life. I want to share my passion with the WORLD! I want people to turn my song up on the radio and say, ‘That’s my jam,’ like I do when I hear my favorite song. Most importantly, I want to show younger artists that it’s possible to make your dreams come true after working so hard and being so dedicated.
