The O Music Awards ARE HERE!

Posted June 19

Finally, friends: It’s almost showtime! The O Music Awards are mere HOURS away and after weeks and weeks of voting, you, the fans, have amassed more than 88 million votes (twice as many as last year — and we’re not done)! That is simply incredible — and in return, we’re fixing to unveil unto you an equally incredible show!

For those just joining us, this year’s O Music Awards comes in the form of a 24-hour live, online-only music fest, featuring more than 50 bands, 16 prestigious awards, a whole litter of cats, one goat and a 24-hour #drumathon in which Party King Andrew W.K. will attempt to set a new record for “Longest Drum Session” in a retail store.

Thirteen of our categories closed last night at midnight, with the exception of our extremely popular Fan Army FTW award (which honors the fan armies with the most drive and aplomb), O Music Awards Super Fan (awarded to the fan who drives the most votes) and Make A Band Famous, a brand-new category in which we’ll endeavor to give one band their big break!

A refresher on what that category entails: Artists/bands first opted into the contest via Viacom Music Group’s artist platform (Artists.MTV, Artists.VH1, Artists.CMT), with 10 semifinalists determined by internal committee and fan engagement. After nearly one million votes, the five top vote-getters were chosen to play the show. During the live show, the band who scores the most votes will get a once-in-a-lifetime shot to play VMA weekend in August, as well as the distinction of becoming MTV’s Artist to Watch, VH1’s You Oughta Know, or CMT’s Listen Up highlighted band. Our five Make A Band Famous finalists are: Chill Moody, Darling Parade, The So So Glos, Striking Matches and Syd Arthur.

In addition — seeing as how we are hosting a 24-hour music festival — we will be featuring 50+ bands in locations like New York, Nashville and Los Angeles, with the Jonas Brothers kicking the whole deal off in New York City — where Andrew W.K. and Questlove will be getting the drum-centric festivities started. Other bands/artists performing include Kate Nash, Gavin DeGraw, Hanson, Oberhofer, K. Michelle and many, many, many more!

Whew! This is shaping up to be quite the show!

At this juncture in the day let’s all take a moment to sit and reflect on how amazingly impossible this whole endeavor is: The ability to watch live music going down no matter where in the world you reside. The Web has truly afforded us a monumental ability here: The ability for us to entertain you in real time, and the ability for you to be entertained. In the end, that’s what the O Music Awards are REALLY about: MUSIC, TECH & FANS!

Now brace yourselves — the party is just about to get started!
